The Bar-tailed godwit (Kuaka; Limosa lapponica) is a migratory shorebird that breeds in the northern hemisphere (Alaska and Siberia) and over-winters in countries as far-flung as New Zealand. Miranda has a large population of thousands of Godwits that arrive from the Northern hemisphere every year and leave again at the end of summer. This photo is of the small group that return to Blackpool beach on Waiheke island each year.
