New Zealand dotterel (Charadrius obscurus) in breeding plumage on Whakanewha beach, Waiheke island. This endemic species is sparsely distributed around New Zealand. Its main problem is that it likes nesting on sandy beaches which humans also like. As a result their population has plummeted from historic levels.
