White-faced heron (Matuku)
White-faced heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) on the shore at McLeod Bay, Whangarei heads on a retreating tide. This is a very common heron species found on mudflats and tidal waters. They prey on a wide range of species including crabs, small fish, invertebrates, lizards.
