Cook’s petrel (Pterodroma cookii) seen while on a deep-sea fishing trip a couple of kilometres offshore of Great Barrier island. These birds once nested in coastal forests up and down the length of New Zealand, but are now extinct in the mainland and have only two breeding colonies: Hauturu/Little Barrier island in the north (where this one would have come from) and Codfish island in the far south.
